If You Think All Fungus Is Bad…

Sound like a weird title for a note from the Broyhill? Well then, you need to come out to our Wine 101 class! We don’t call it “Getting Schooled on Wine” for nothing! Tonight the theme for the wine tasting was on wines from Germany and Austria. A few fun facts from the evening include:

Germany is most known for it’s white wines. 85% of the wines produced there are white.

Germany’s noted wine region is in the South-West along the Rhine and Mosel rivers near France. It is too cold in the northern areas of Germany to support wine production.

Austrian Wine Classification is based off of the German system. This is not a bad thing since Austrian grape varietals and characteristics are very similar to Germany’s anyway.

Those may be a couple of fun facts from tonight’s wine tasting, but the most interesting things that I learned include scandal and fungus. There’s nothing quite like a scandal to throw some intrigue into a class! Austria had a wine scandal in 1985 when wine brokers decided to add sweetness and body to wine by adding antifreeze. Startling? It certainly was when the public found out, even though this little addition was not necessarily harmful. The good that came out of this scandal is that new regulations pushed the wine industry toward higher quality production. And who’s against higher quality? Now, you may still be wondering where on earth the fungus statement came from. Well, when grapes get the Botrytis fungus it does not mean the end of the season for those vines. This honey-like fungus actually has a positive effect on the grapes by reducing the water content and concentrating the sugars in the grape. Grapes effected by this are used in some of the higher quality wines made in Germany. So next time you think about fungus, don’t write it off completely, you never know when it could be a good thing! If you think this information is pretty interesting then try pairing it with wine! Our next Wine 101 class is December 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 and is on the white and red wines from Spain and Portugal. You can find more information at http://www.broyhillinn.com/events/wineseries/. Come join us! You never know what you might learn!

Educational Brewery Plans are underway at the Broyhill Inn

We are very excited about our new partnership with Appalachian State University in the development of an Educational Brewery on site at the Brohill Inn and Conference Center.  The honors level course will cover the actual beer making techniques and also the business development of a small business, production costs, operations, marketing and communications.  Now this is a class that I would be happy to go back to school for…  More information will be coming out in the following weeks.

Wine 101 Educational Series continues Wednesday at the Broyhill Inn

Join us Wednesday, November 18th for a Taste of German and Austrian wines- $15 at the door, begins at 6:30 PM. Learning about wine has never tasted so good!

The Broyhill Inn & Peabody’s are pleased to continue the educational Wine 101 series of wine tastings at the Broyhill Inn. As with the Wine 101 tastings we have done previously, this tasting will be educational, with a specific focus on an element of wine, or in this case a country, yet relaxed and fun!  Come join us for the best tasting education.
