Route 321 detour to the High Country

Route 321 detour to the High Country

The closure of Route 321 south of Blowing Rock is going to continue into next week.  There is a great article on the High Country Press website to give you the scoop on the detour.  http://www.highcountrypress.com/weekly/2009/12-10-09/ncdot-extends-highway-321-closure.htm

Funny how you can learn about your area on a whim!

I was traveling back to the High Country yesterday from a trip with the family and I discovered to my surprise that Route 321 was closed north of Lenoir.  I had come down this route on Sunday and it was open and fine but I guess some rocks decided to shift and fall.. thus, no traffic permitted.  I have always wanted to “travel Globe road” which to locals is something that you should add to your bucket list.  The Globe Road is a one lane dirt road that winds its way up the mountain and ends on the cliff side of Blowing Rock.  What a fun time had by all.. well, at least by me.  Not sure how the rest of the family enjoyed it.  Beautiful land and scenes and a slice of Americana that is off the beaten path for sure.  The journey lasted about 20 extra minutes to climb the 3,000 + feet in elevation but was well worth it..  I have now concurred Globe Road.
